n early 1960s, orthopedic surgery was a part of general surgery and some general practitioners performed primary orthopedic measures, such as treatment of fractures. The first dean of department of orthopedic in University of Mashhad was Dr. Ahrabi Nejhad (deceased). In 1970, Dr. Jafar Amini was recruited by the department of orthopedics after his return from Canada. Ghaem Hospital was opened on 1972. The department of orthopedics was established by Dr. Amini, Dr. Gar and Dr. Mozafari Moghadam.
